What more can be said about Christmas carols and their importance for celebrating the season? It’s a spiritual time of joyous celebration and sober remembrance – and the more family and friends, the better!
I felt it important to focus exclusively on carols, songs that celebrate the appearance and life of Lord Jesus Christ. I was strongly drawn to less well-known carols from Europe and the British Isles, an overlooked treasure trove. Most of my selections are found in two wonderful and important anthologies, the Oxford Book of Carols (1928) and the International Book of Christmas Carols (1963).
I chose minimal (or no) accompaniment, to keep the focus on the story, and on the intimacy of personal relationship. For some of the carols in the medleys, I chose just the verses which I thought essential.
